No fewer than two persons were feared
dead on Wednesday as a commercial bus collided with a trailer along the
Mile 2 end of the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.
It was gathered that the commercial bus
driver was driving against traffic to avoid gridlock at Mile 2. The
collision was said to have been fatal because both vehicles were moving
at top speed.
A source, who claimed to be an eyewitness, said the accident occurred around 8am.
According to the source, who identified
himself simply as Ifeanyi, the expressway, where the incident occurred,
is usually busy at that time of the day.
He said, “Traffic on this road is
usually heavy, especially during morning hours. Some of these commercial
bus drivers resort to driving against traffic (one-way) in order to
evade traffic jam at Mile 2.
“The commercial bus involved was driving
against traffic from Oshodi, while the trailer driver was on the right
lane, on his way to Oshodi. I guess he did not notice the oncoming bus
on time. The collision was so fatal that the bus somersaulted, while the
trailer veered off the road. Two persons died on the spot.”
A commercial motorcycle rider, who
identified himself simply as Tony, said he did not witness the accident,
but got to the scene a few minutes later.
“I got to the scene a few minutes after
the collision. I heard that two of the victims died instantly. I also
witnessed how the bus driver, who was trapped inside the somersaulted
vehicle, was dragged out. He had multiple injuries and was seriously
bleeding. I heard he was later taken to a hospital,” he said
A LASTMA official, who declined
identification, said the commercial bus was removed by officials of the
Federal Road Safety Corps and the police.
He said, “I had not reported for duty
when the incident happened. When I got here, I saw policemen and FRSC
officials towing the bus. The trailer was parked somewhere there
(pointing towards the direction), but I don’t know when it was removed.”
The Public Relations Officer, Lagos
State Police Command, Kenneth Nwosu, had yet to get back to our
correspondent as of the time of this report.
